Problem with Sears
Author: Brian
So Melissa and I had fun on the weekend registering for a bunch of stuff at Sears. We actually registered for stuff we need and want, which is great because for a while we thought we already had everything!
But now we’ve run into a small, annoying problem.
There are a few things that we registered for that were on sale, heavily marked down, but these prices are not what people will see on the registry. Here is an extreme example: We registered for some good pots and pans, in a set, which were on sale for something like $299, marked down from their regular price, $699. Unfortunately, when people look at the registry, they will see $699, and have no idea that these pots are on sale for $299! There are two problems with this. Firstly, the higher regular price might deter people from even looking at the item to begin with, even though the item at its sale price would be something they would consider. Secondly, and this is even worse, Sears allows you to buy the items online or in the store, and their sales don’t always apply to both. I was able to add the pots and pants to my cart, online, at $699! If someone would have actually done this they would have no idea that they could have got it for cheaper by going into the store.
I spoke to Sears, and they said that they can’t put sale prices on the registry because sales are temporary, even though I know that a lot of their items are “always” on sale, like towels. What she did for us though is added a note saying that the item is on sale in the store, but she couldn’t change the regular price display.
We’re thinking at this point we might register for all our big stuff at the Bay, since supposedly they show the current price of items on their registries.

We went to register today… it’s really weird, we have everything. We’ve been living together for 2 years… so it’s not like we need much. We spent an hour at Caynes, and we ended up registering for 15 things.. hahah… it’s really weird. At least all 15 are things we want/need but just never bought. I think a lot of people when they register they just go nuts, and then either they have rooms full of crap they don’t need, or end up taking most of it back… and also wasting peoples money. We’re not into that… so we’re being conservative with what we’re registering for. We don’t wanna waste your money!! And also we want stuff that we need, not just stuff that we wanna get just cuz we’re getting married.
It’s funny, because like 4 years ago Brian and I would go to the Bay and walk around and look at kitchen stuff, and we’d be like “OMG i want this”… and he’d always say “We’re gonna get engaged soon and get all of this stuff…” Every. Single. Time.
But four years passed and we didn’t get engaged, and then just ended up buying all the stuff we wanted. Way to miss the boat Brian.
While we were at Caynes we saw a ton of stuff we were gonna register for but instead we chose to just buy ourself. But then we left without buying it, or registering for it. But I think we’re gonna go back in a couple days and buy all that stuff. We just feel weird about asking people to buy us random stuff that we need now. Like dish towels or whatever
We’re also gonna register at the Bay, but we have to sit down and have some meeting with them for it. Really, we’d both like to register at Williams Sonoma, because then we know we’re gonna get some good stuff that lasts, stuff we love, and not just stuff that’s made in China and gonna break in a few months that we’re gonna have to replace. So we’re going to do lots of research on products before we register for anything at The Bay, just to make sure we don’t get anything that’s gonna break. I’d feel so bad if someone spent like 50 bucks on something that broke a month later.
Another issue is we have a tiny condo… so all these boxes of stuff, we have no idea where they’re gonna go. We wanted to go look at houses today, but it got too late. I guess we can store a lot of stuff in the den, but the only problem is when we do try and sell this condo, where are we gonna put the stuff? I guess we won’t get most of it for a while, so we’ll see.
It was pretty fun, but not as much fun as we thought it would be. I guess we just feel weird that we’re kinda telling people what to buy for us. But that’s just us, i’m sure most couples love it… especially if they’re starting new.
Food!

I think we are set on having vegetarian-only food at the wedding. That way, it is automatically kosher, and we don’t have to spend a lot of money on food. Because we can save half the cost, we can focus on having it at a venue we really want, instead of a synagogue, which we don’t feel 100% comfortable in. Plus, people don’t need to eat meat all the time! There are some great vegetarian dishes out there.
We still have to register for stuff. It weird me out when I think that, because we pretty much have everything we need! We have nice dishes, appliances, utensils, and whatever else. The only things I can think of at the top of my head are nicer towels, really good pots and pans, maybe a bread maker, and perhaps little things like spatulas and ice cream scoopers. But that’s not a lot of stuff. So many people I know register for too much, and it all ends up in their parents’ basements because there’s no room in their own kitchens! What’s the point of registering for stuff you’ll never use? I guess some people are just registration gun happy! Cash is always good. Mmmmmm cash.
